Program Description:

Anesthesia is one of the most exciting and promising areas of medicine for young physicians today. The practice of anesthesiology combines areas such as clinical anesthesia, pain therapy and intensive care management. The practice of anesthesia has undergone many changes recently including more diversification, which allows anesthesiologists to focus on the sub-specialty areas that interest them the most.

Our anesthesia residency program prepares candidates for fellowships in the following areas: cardiovascular, critical care, neuro-anesthesia, obstetrics, pain, pediatrics, regional, research, and transplant anesthesia. The development of these sub-specialties further enhances opportunities for anesthesiologists and offers stability for the future, especially since job availability is one of the most promising aspects of anesthesia.

South Pointe Hospital is a busy community hospital that features a new $40 million state of the art surgery center with a 24 bed ICU that houses some of the most modern medical equipment available today. A new educational center was also part of the addition and provides students, interns, residents and attendings with access to a full service medical library, skills labs, computer lab and multiple conference rooms for education, meetings or individual study. The Department of Anesthesia at South Pointe Hospital is committed to teaching and providing a comprehensive clinical anesthesia experience. The program will prepare you to deliver the best possible care to adult and pediatric patients requiring anesthesia and intensive care. Our attending physicians are knowledgeable in the latest developments in anesthesia drugs and treatment modalities and are sincerely interested in providing residents with a first quality education.

South Pointe anesthesia residents spend two years in-house and one year on outside rotations. Our program combines general anesthesia with an emphasis on sub-specialty areas. Our residents are given opportunities to gain exposure at area hospitals, which enhances the diversity of their training.

Curriculum:

Internship: The 3-year anesthesia residency program is linked with the first postgraduate year internship. South Pointe Hospital accepts two interns each year and upon successful completion of the internship, the interns begin the 3-year residency program. The internship consists of one-month rotations in various fields of medicine including: internal medicine, surgery, ICU, pediatrics, OB/GYN, cardiology, family practice, ER, and anesthesiology.

Residency:

PGY2: The first year of residency, training emphasizes basic and fundamental aspects of the management of general and regional anesthesia. Levels of responsibility increase as residents gain experience. PGY2 residents are under direct supervision until both the resident and faculty are confident that they are ready to become more independent. All anesthesia residents are provided with their own companion phones to help facilitate independence in the operating room while being assured that assistance is only a phone call away.

The didactic training during the first six months focuses on pertinent anatomy, physiology, pharmacology and pathology. Much time is also devoted to developing skills such as intubation, spinal punctures, arterial lines, and obtaining peripheral IV access. During the second part of the first year, didactic training focuses on ECG interpretation, management of arrhythmias, CXR interpretation and osteopathic principles as they relate to anesthesia.

PGY3:

Cardiovascular Anesthesia 12 weeks Cleveland Clinic
Surgical Intensive Care Unit 8 weeks Cleveland Clinic
Pediatric Anesthesia 10 weeks Akron Children's Medical Center
Obstetrical Anesthesia 10 weeks Fairview Hospital
Pain Management 4 weeks

Pain Management Center at
South Pointe Hospital

PGY 4: Residents are responsible for more complex and difficult anesthetic procedures and must be able to assume complete management of assigned cases. In addition, there will be training in vascular and thoracic anesthesia. During this final year, the residents are also given the opportunity to gain business knowledge facilitating their ability to operate in a successful anesthesia partnership.

The Skills Lab is located in the new educational center and contains some of the most advanced and sophisticated training devices available today, including SimMan. SimMan is a high-tech realistic mannequin that is operated from a remote computer. It simulates emergency scenarios in a controlled setting. This prepares our anesthesia residents for dealing with real life situations. Read more about SimMan at: http://www.laerdal.com/simman/simman.htm. Many other mannequins are also available to practice intubations, central lines, and peripheral lines.

Difficult airway labs are also held to help the residents become proficient in using various techniques to obtain an airway including:

  • Fiberoptic Scope Intubations
  • Fastrach LMA
  • Eshman Catheter assisted intubations
  • Retrograde Intubations

Research

Research opportunities are excellent as South Pointe Hospital. During the residency, each resident is required to prepare a scientific paper, which is either an original contribution or a case report with newly recognized or rarely reported features. The Center of Excellence supports resident research development including project design, data collection, statistical analysis and publication. In addition, the medical library is staffed with personnel dedicated to supporting the resident’s literature search for their research project.
