Program Description:
The Family Medicine Residency program's goal is to train competent family physicians who will contribute to the osteopathic medical profession. This program provides a broad based, comprehensive educational experience.
This program is fully accredited by the American Osteopathic Association and fulfills all the requirements of the Model Program as established by the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians.
Since the goals and needs of each resident vary, the residency program provides the core curriculum of ambulatory and inpatient care, and is flexible enough to meet the needs of each resident's anticipated practice. Elective times are available to fill the experiential needs of each resident. Our residents receive a well-rounded clinical and didactic experience.
Our Family Medicine residency program is based at South Pointe Hospital's Fleet Medical Center, which is located in the "Slavic Village" area of Cleveland. The founder of our hospital, Theodore Classen, D.O. established the clinic in 1984 to repay the community who supported him in his medical education and practice. We continue to support the area with competent medical care by our attending staff and residents.
One of the most important aspects of the program is the progressive responsibility of the resident for patient care. Throughout the two-year program, residents assume larger patient panels. Continuity of care is emphasized.
Our state-of-the-art Skills Lab, allows us to integrate hands on experience, such as joint injections, auscultation, suturing and ACLS into our weekly didactic meetings. This gives our residents additional opportunities to develop important skills that they may not master in their daily experiences.

Our weekly didactic program consists of lectures, journal clubs, skills labs and board reviews. The residents and medical students prepare and present topics as assigned by the chief resident and program director. These sessions also involve visiting lecturers from varying specialties with emphasis on the primary care aspect of their topics. Our program also takes part in the OUCOM RPAC programs, where Family Medicine residents from the entire state gather on a monthly basis for educational programs and networking.
The Family Medicine residents also participate in the GME weekly Clinical Management Conference. This is a CME program presented by residents from all our residency programs, each resident presents an interesting case for discussion by attending physicians, residents and students.
