From its inception, the internal medicine residency program at South Pointe Hospital has been designed to provide comprehensive inpatient and outpatient care to patients. The internal medicine residents assume progressive responsibility for their patients throughout their training under the supervision of board certified general internists and sub specialists. The majority of required rotations are available at South Pointe Hospital with affiliation agreements established for rotations at other facilities when indicated.

Didactics are an essential part of the internal medicine program. Throughout the 24 months of training following internship, structured didactic programs are held as scheduled. Morning report occurs five mornings per week. Each month is dedicated to a different medical subspecialty. The morning report schedule includes Cecil’s Club, Board Review, a bimonthly Journal Club, Tumor Board, Cleveland Clinic Grand Rounds, attending physician lectures, resident lectures, and case presentations by house staff. IM residents attend noon lecture which covers required topics for the internal medicine curriculum as well as for other residency programs. Additionally, residents participate in a bimonthly infectious disease round table discussion as well as special board review presentations by a variety of sub specialists.

The skills lab at South Pointe is also regularly utilized for teaching IM residents. Residents participate in labs dedicated to central line placement, arterial line placement, peripheral IV placement and ABGs. They are also instructed in intubation and simulated medicine as well.

Residents attend four CORE RPAC presentations in central Ohio annually. These programs strive to provide progressive education beyond what is provided at the individual hospitals. Simulated medicine scenarios and evidenced based medicine seminars are presented as well as sessions dedicated to evaluating residents in resident-patient scenarios and in teaching scenarios. Quality improvement and diversity are other topics addressed. The CORE RPAC strongly incorporates the core competencies into its yearly curriculum plan. (see CORE RPAC schedule in appendix)

As summarized above, several teaching methods are utilized in addition to traditional precepting in the inpatient and outpatient settings. Residents are provided with extensive opportunities to admit and manage patients. Daily reading assignments are given on the general IM services in keeping with the curriculum and discussed at the completion of rounds. House staff and attending physicians present cases and lectures on an assigned basis. The outpatient clinic gives residents with the opportunity to provide continuity of care in a longitudinal fashion one half day per week. Patients are encouraged to schedule outpatient follow up appointments with “their physician” when they leave the outpatient clinic to assure continuity of care. Residents present monthly outpatient topics as part of the continuity clinic curriculum.

Regarding documentation, residents record outpatient patient logs and procedure logs as well as work hours on New Innovations Residency Management Suite software that is readily available for them to use. Logs and evaluations are reviewed by the program director during quarterly review meetings and at the end of each academic year.
