Internship Program

Our 18 position Internship Program includes rotations in Family Practice, all areas of Internal Medicine, all Surgical Specialties, Pediatrics, OB/GYN and Emergency Medicine. Internship Specialty Tracks are offered in Emergency Medicine and Family Practice. In addition, Fast Track Internships are offered in Internal Medicine. We also provide the following approved residency slots: (5) Anesthesia, (18) Emergency Medicine, (12) Family Practice, (5) General Surgery, (9) Internal Medicine and (6) Orthopedic Surgery.

 

 

Our Internship Program offers a quality and depth of cases rarely seen. Intern cases are patient driven and focus heavily on firsthand contact. The number and variety of programs offered by Cleveland Clinic Health System - East Region South Pointe Hospital add to the scope and intensity of the Internship. The core curriculum for Interns was created through years of painstaking research and is reviewed for content each year. You will receive a didactic education program that is complemented by many informal layers such as morning reports on patient-driven issues, weekly morning cardiology mini-conferences, weekly surgery department meetings and many other small group settings.

 

The Anesthesia Residency Program

 

Year One: Cleveland Clinice Health System - East Region Anesthesia Group runs the second largest pain program in the country, providing you with a full array of first-year opportunities including exposure to basic sciences, the Recovery Room, bag and mask cases, and an introduction to both Obstetrics and Pediatrics. During this time, you will also learn about intubations, and general and balanced anesthesia.

 

 

Year Two: Second-year curriculum is equally demanding and encompasses study of non-cardiac, neuro and outpatient anesthesia, as well as advanced training in general anesthesia and general anesthesia vascular. Relevant aspects of EKG, Radiology and SICU are also covered, along with a basic science review.

 

 

Year Three: Third-year Anesthesia residents at Cleveland Clinic Health System - East Region are provided with the unique opportunity to participate in up to four Open Heart surgeries per day versus the two per week offered by typical programs. Year Three also offers rotations in Intensive Care, Obstetrics, Pediatrics and Pain Therapy at a number of area hospitals and health clinics.

The Emergency Medicine Residency Program

Year One: The first six months of this program will focus on Cardiology and the ED. Residents will be required to take the ACLS course, achieve certification as an ACLS Instructor, and complete the Advanced Trauma Life Support Course. The remainder of Year One curriculum will include Anesthesia, Radiology, ICU-CCU Cardiology, Orthopedics, Surgery/SICU, Pediatric ED, and General Internal Medicine. Participation in Dog Labs will be required, as will a week-long Emergency Medicine review course.

 

 

Year Two: This phase of the program will expand your exposure to a variety of clinical areas and better prepare you for hands-on work in the ED. Second-year study will encompass ED/ED Trauma, Neurosurgery, EENT-Ophthalmology, Surgery/SICU, OB/GYN, EMS and Life Flight, and Pediatric ED.

 

 

Year Three: Successful completion of Year Three will render you eligible for certification by the American Board of Osteopathic Emergency Medicine, and a leadership role within virtually any ED. Research is mandatory during this phase which also includes six months in the ED and two months of elective study. You will also build upon your previous exposure to EMS and Life Flight, Pediatric ED and SICU.

The Family Practice Residency Program

 

This two-year program, including six months of elective rotations, is available following the completion of an approved Osteopathic internship. The program is at the same time broad-based and comprehensive, covering a core curriculum of ambulatory and inpatient care.

 

Family Practice residents also enjoy a great deal of flexibility in order to meet their individual goals, educational needs and future practice plans. All aspects of clinical and didactic study are provided in a family atmosphere that encourages responsibility and effective practice management.

 

 

Over the two-year period, residents will provide care within a resident-run, free-standing ambulatory care center, as well as within our hospital environment. Off-campus study is also encouraged to ensure a well-rounded residency experience. Successful completion of all elements will prepare you for the board certification exam administered by the American Board of Osteopathic Family Physicians.

The Internal Medicine Residency Program

The Internal Medicine Residency Program is designed to prepare you for a successful practice in general internal medicine or fellowship training in your preferred sub-specialty. A structured core curriculum is provided, along with individualized elective rotations and educational opportunities pertinent to your career goals.

 

 

Regardless of your focus, responsibility for direct, hands-on patient care steadily increases throughout the duration of the program. Necessary support and direction will come from experienced specialty and sub-specialty staff who are equally enthusiastic about your future plans.

 

Wide cross-section case profiles and diversified urban, suburban and rural patient population are additional highlights this program. An ambulatory clinic experience augments the resident's learning.

The General Surgery Residency Program

This intensive four-year program offers you the opportunity to make a tremendous impact on the lives of others. You will begin with simple, supervised surgeries during your first year as you head toward the complex independent surgeries that mark Year Four.

 

 

Initial training will take place in general, thoracic, urological, gynecological and vascular surgery, as well pathology and surgical oncology. Second and third-year study will encompass a wide variety of rotations, while third and fourth-year elective rotations will focus on your chosen field. Specialty rotations include burn unit, trauma center, colorectal and endocrine surgery, liver transplant and more.

 

 

State-of-the-art technologies and advanced clinical trials will further define your level of surgical expertise as you continue on your way to becoming a competent, qualified, Cleveland Clinic Health System - East Region-trained surgeon.

The Orthopedic Surgery Residency Program

 

Year One: This phase begins after the resident has first completed an approved Osteopathic internship and is subsequently appointed by the Board of Trustees at South Pointe Hospital. Year One is spent studying general orthopedic surgical procedures, primarily in pre and post-op care. A portion of each day will be spent in the offices of established orthopedic surgeons where the various phases of diagnosis and treatment will come to life.

 

 

Years Two, Three & Four: During these years, responsibilities will increase dependent upon previous performance. One year of off-campus training will be provided throughout this time, and will include: basic science training at Case Western Reserve University; hand surgery at St. Luke's Hospital; pediatrics (or other approved program) at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation; trauma training (or other approved program) at St. Vincent Charity Hospital and Health Center; and an approved elective program. The final phases of Year Four will be in orthopedic surgery at Cleveland Clinic Health System - East Region.

 

 

Residents will also participate in ward rounds, active and on-call duty, orthopedic autopsies, clinicopathological conferences, and intern/resident lectures. At least one scientific paper per year is also required of Orthopedic Surgery residents.

The Peripheral Vascular Surgery Residency Program

This is a one-year program for the resident who has already completed a general surgery residency. All twelve months will be devoted to general vascular service including rotation through vascular operating room, vascular laboratory, and a relevant one-month elective. Exposure to angiography, interventional techniques and office practices will also be provided as scheduling and availability allows.

 

 

Residents in this program will also: hold monthly vascular conferences; extend staff education; assist with routine procedures; attend one major vascular seminar; participate in local vascular society lectures; and prepare an annual scientific paper.

Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery Residency Program

Enrollment in this two-year program requires successful completion of an approved osteopathic general surgery residency, orthopedic surgery residency, or ear, nose and throat residency. Board eligibility in your original specialty is a must, as is board certification in that specialty. A basic laser course with credentialing is also a prerequisite.

 

 

During this program, residents are exposed to a wide variety of plastic and reconstructive surgeries. The majority of plastic surgeries are now outpatient in nature, so a full array of study will be offered in this area (i.e. ambulatory care, office procedures, consultations and follow-up).

 

Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery residents will be required to attend clinical pathological conferences, departmental meetings, and journal and book clubs. Presentation of at least one scientific paper per year is also expected.
