As a medical student, you will work under the supervision of the intern, resident and attending physician. You may, in the presence of your supervisor, take part in the care of the patients assigned to you. Your attendings will countersign all entries in patient records.
History and Physicals:
Your preceptor will review all H&P you complete and provide appropriate feedback.
Procedures:
You may perform a procedure in the immediate presence of a physician staff member.
Limitations:
Under no circumstances should you, as a medical student, write orders or act as a scribe for any physician.
All history and physicals, progress notes, or other chart documentation must be countersigned by a intern/resident or attending physician.
Work Hours:
Your day will begin between 6:30a and 7a (depending on service). The day will end at 5pm. Variations of these hours are at the discretion of the attending physician, intern, or resident.
Didactic Programs:
To supplement the clinical training you will receive on each rotation, you are expected to attend the daily conferences.
Noon Conference is held daily in the Education Center. Topics span multiple disciplines. The speakers range from faculty to national known physicians. Please check the schedule daily for updates.
Each service has a specific didactic schedule. You will be required to attend these courses / conferences. The didactic calendars will be provided at the beginning of your rotation.
Many rotations require medical student to do a presentation before completion of the rotation. The Chief Resident for the service will assign the topic and date for presentation.
In addition to our many didactic programs, you have the opportunity to take part hands-on training. This curriculum is repeated four times during the academic year. Please check your department packet for the times and dates. The Skills Lab curriculum is mandatory for all students while on rotation at our institution.
Student Identification/ Professional Appearance:
You must wear your school lab coat at all times while in the hospital. Student ID badges will be provided during your rotation and must be worn at all times. Beepers will also be assigned for the duration of your rotation, and must be returned in good working order upon completion of your rotation.
A professional appearance is expected. Inappropriate attire will not be tolerated. This includes: denim pants, sweats, soiled clothing and shoes, open toe shoes, shorts, and tee shirts. Scrubs will be assigned on as a needed basis. Scrubs are permitted as daily attire only on surgical services.
